Welcome!
This page is for my biology 03 Introduction to biology course at LA city college for the Fall 2019 semester.
General Information for 1st week.
There are several things you need to do before the next class on Thur 8/30. Remember, this also applies to students not yet enrolled but are hoping to add. Here are at least some of the things you need to do prior to our next class.
If you haven't already, make sure you register successfully on canvas (see below)
NOTE: You do not need to print up any protocol for lab this week. You do not need a scantron for the quiz. Just bring something to write with, preferably both a pencil with an eraser and a pen.
If you haven't already, make sure you register successfully on canvas (see below)
- CAREFULLY read ENTIRE syllabus
- Read chapter 1 from the beginning up to but not including section 1.2
- See instructions below for how to gain access to the textbook
- Download reading guide for quiz 1 will be posted Tues late night,
- Study for quiz 1 which will be given at the beginning of class on Thursday.(see syllabus for general information on quizzes and question types)
- On Thursday 8/29 meet again in room 103 (same room as the first day)
- DON"T FREAK OUT!!!! While reading quizzes are worth points, there are many of them and each individual quiz will not have much of an effect on your grade, If you don't do as well as you would like as long as you work to improve your scores, the first few shouldn't have much of an effect.
- Make sure to take notes during class.
NOTE: You do not need to print up any protocol for lab this week. You do not need a scantron for the quiz. Just bring something to write with, preferably both a pencil with an eraser and a pen.

Students already enrolled... Access Canvas
You should already be enrolled and registered through canvas. You should be using canvas as your primary source of information for this class. While you can associate other email addresses with canves, the default is your student email through laccd, so if you are having trouble, check your student emal. To make sure you can get into canvas, do the following:
- Check your student email i.e. ending with student.laccd.edu
- Note: your password may have changed since the last time you used it:
- if it has, please follow: http://lacitycollege.edu/Students/Student-Email/Logging-In-To-Student-Email
- Note: your password may have changed since the last time you used it:
- Log in to cavas:
- If you run into trouble, make sure you contact me by using the information in the syllabus posted above.
Students trying to add... Fill out form and check back here
If you are not enrollled but trying to add, you MUST complete the following to be added to the waitlist:
- Fill out the add form at the bottom of the page.
- If you need to contact me, refer to the instructions in the syllabus
- Do everything described above for the 1st week, including the assigned reading and studying to be prepared for quizzes each day. You do not need to purchase anything to complete the reading and prepare for quizzes. Yes, I know you are not officially enrolled but I don't want you to fall behind and if you are added the quizzes will be counted for points, whether you study for them or not.
Textbook access
The textbook is a free open source textbook from openstax. The openstax title is Concepts of Biology but there will be an online service that integrates the textbook and will be where homework will be submitted. This service will likely have some cost associated with it. I will give details when we make a final decision about which service to use.
By the add/drop deadline, I will want you to use the textbook through the LRNR (or other) service (which requires a registration fee) but in the meantime you can access the book as a downloadable pdf or online through openstax see below. Once you are registered on LRNR and can successfully log in, I want you to use LRNR as the primary way you read your textbook. The digital version offers several different interactive enhancements not possible in printed books: you can highlight, take notes, click links, etc. in addition to helpful tools such as a glossary sidebar which all help in the learning process and is a major advantage that digital textbooks can provide.
It is important that you read the chapter whether you are enrolled or not. If you are added, then the quiz will count towards your grade even if you were not yet enrolled when the quiz was taken.
